Dr Messinis is Senior Research Fellow at the Victoria Institute of Strategic Economic Studies (VISES). He has published in a range of topics including consumer behaviour, education, labour economics, innovation, migration, and economic development. Since 2006, his research agenda has centred on the theme of Education, Skills and Productivity. He also has expertise in statistical software, large databases, and state-of-the-art applied econometrics of survey, time-series and panel data. Dr Messinis has taught in undergraduate, Honours, MBA, and DBA courses and has supervised post-graduate students, and is currently the post-graduate student coordinator.

Dr Messinis has led research teams that have made significant contributions to Victoria University and its engagement with industry and the research community. Since 2005, he has managed the SEEK Employment Indicators project in a partnership with SEEK Pty Ltd. The project has delivered monthly reports on internet job advertisement and applications posted with SEEK. These indicators have been established as leading indicators of labour market trends in regional Australia and New Zealand. In 2008-09, Dr Messinis led a VISES research team that mapped the VU student population and the role of diversity in academic performance. In 2014, funded by Curtin University and the Mitchell Institute, he has begun to explore the performance of VU students of low socio-economic status over the period 2005-2013.
