Australian ICT Trade Update 2007 provides a comprehensive review of the latest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) trade statistics. It is the latest in a series of Information Industries and Technologies reports from the Centre for Strategic Economic Studies.

Australian ICT Trade Update 2007 presents a detailed analysis of the evolution of Australia's Information and Communication Technology trade over the decade 1996 to 2006. This year's report presents a more
detailed exploration of ICT services and software trade than previous editions. It tracks and analyses:

  • The composition of Australia's ICT related services imports and exports (1996 to 2006); 
  • Australia's balance of trade in ICT related services (1996 to 2006);
  • The major markets for Australia's ICT related services exports, and sources of our imports (2000 to 2005);
  • Australia's software trade trends (1996 to 2006);
  • The composition of Australia's ICT equipment imports and exports (1996 to 2006);
  • Australia's balance of trade in ICT equipment (1996 to 2006);
  • The major markets for Australia's ICT equipment exports, and sources of our imports (1996 to 2006); and
  • State-by-State breakdown of ICT trade, including analyses of ICT equipment and services imports and exports for all the States and Territories.

Major trends and developments are highlighted, and issues discussed. The report concludes by discussing the challenge of offshoring and suggests possible policy directions.

About the Author 

Professor John Houghton of Victoria University's Centre for Strategic Economic Studies (CSES) has had many years experience in information technology policy, more general industry policy and related economic research. He has spoken and published widely on information technology, industry, science and technology policy issues, and undertaken research projects for a wide range of national and international organizations.

Career highlights include: Senior Research Fellow at CIRCIT and leader and of the coordinator Centre's Software and Services Research Program; Principal Economist at the Bureau of Industry Economics, leading a research program focussing on ICT policy issues and participating in the Bureau's infrastructure services benchmarking program; Adviser, Information Industries Policy at the Australian Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Tourism where he was involved in the Information Industries Taskforce; and Principal Adviser, Victorian Department of State Development where he took a lead role in directing the Department's policy research agenda.
